This is a helpful and clever little book, published by The National Trust. It offers a clear and succinct guide to a host of subjects: the positioning and use of cutlery, the positioning of dinner guests, appropriate dress as well as its history (when was the tuxedo ‘invented’ and what is its purpose?); how to open a bottle of sparkling wine, and so on.
In addition to the factual material, the book reminds me of such programs as the background guides to Downton Abbey. In its advice and tone the book creates a world (as all great fiction does), in some cases a lost world. The author is kindly, commonsensical and down to earth, but also judgmental as only a proper butler can be. He offers, e.g., some don’ts for the table:
DON’T say gateau—it’s all cake, really.
DON’T allow your offspring to run riot; unruly children annoy other people intensely.
DON’T draw food off your fork through clenched teeth.
He offers an account of the full workings of the fish knife (including its grip, which is different from the main course knife grip).
He offers some warnings. With regard to asparagus, e.g., he informs you of “the strange aroma when you pass water after eating” it. He also tells you some things you may not wish to know: just prior to consumption “the oyster . . . is still alive; you can prove this by squeezing a few drops of lemon juice into the oyster and see it make a slight wrinkling, shuddering movement.”
Bottom line: consult the book for its information and read in it from time to time for a quaint cultural experience.

Nice little book. Although I was brought up with correct table manners, there are many of the finer points discussed in this book that have helped me to "raise the bar." For those of us who realize how much of one's social standing is communicated through dining customs, this is a "must read".

Charming, witty and useful. A light read that covers most situations. Also a quick read. Not to long but packed with helpful hints. Afterall, Do you know where you are supposed to put your napkin when you leave the table? Hint, it's not in your seat.
