Blood Slave: A Realm Walker Novel, by Kathleen Collins

Can she find a killer in a town where the basest desires are allowed to run free?

There are zombies in the Dead Zone and Juliana Norris is sent to take care of the problem. And for there to be zombies, there had to be bodies. When vampires are found to be the culprits, Juliana is sent undercover in the red light district of Kansas City. Lying to her mate, Thomas Kendrick, isn’t something she wants to do, but she’s in another vampire’s territory and Thomas would not be pleased. Besides, she’s more than capable of doing the job and she needs to prove it to everyone. Most of all herself.

Charles Morgan is in control of the Kansas City area, making a rich living off his various enterprises. Juliana goes undercover at the strip club Lust and gets sucked into his dark, decadent world. More victims turn up and the Agency is positive they’ve got their man, but Juliana is not so sure. When the Agency refuses to listen, she reluctantly turns to Thomas for help. He intervenes but finds Juliana unaware of the danger she is in and discovers she may just be too deep for him to save.

Never a Dull Moment
By Sapphyria
Juliana Norris is back and part of an undercover operation that takes her into the heartland of a different vampire master. Women keep showing up in the Dead Zone dead, drained of their blood, and covered in bite marks - some have even become zombies. In order to find out who is responsible, Juliana must attempt to fit into the debauchery that is the red light district, even if it means she ends up working directly for none other than Charles Morgan.

As per usual - ask Juliana and she'll tell you the same thing - nothing goes as planned. Aggressive vampires come out of the darkness, Juliana's undercover op gets compromised, and she ends up in a situation that that just might get her killed - for good this time. It's a good thing her mate is a very powerful vampire and her kinfolk can be summoned on a whim.

The Realm Walker Series is a gritty urban fantasy collection that keeps the reader intrigued from the get go. The plot and storylines are engaging and keep the readers coming back for more. There are several returning characters and some that are brand new in Book 3. Each secondary character plays out their role perfectly. Good or bad, these characters were written well.

The relationship between Thomas and Juliana is enjoyable. She's his mate and has finally fully accepted her feelings for him and his for her. She's stubborn and I don't really see that changing much. Thomas loves her and dotes on her to the best of his ability while still trying to give Juliana the space and independence she requires. The lovey-dovey situations are sweet and romantic.

I absolutely love this series. The author's writing draws in the reader with excellent character development, world building, and dialogue. The undercover assignment keeps Juliana and her team busy which translates to a lot of action between the pages. There is never a dull moment. You'll be on the edge of your seat until you read the very last sentence. With each additional book, the series just gets better and better (and it's been great from the very beginning).

Please note that this book does contain some low-key adult scenes.

Blood Slave
By Amy
Originally posted at Vampire Book Club

Juliana Norris is still reeling from the loss of her sister-in-law during Juliana’s investigation into The Thief. Juliana blames herself, citing that she should have seen some kind of sign as to who the killer was. Although, no one else (except maybe for her niece Rachel) blames Juliana.

When zombies start showing up in the Dead Zone—an area of land where no life is permitted—of course this draws the attention of the Agency. When said zombies then turn out to be women from missing persons cases and all the bodies feature a myriad of bite marks, all eyes are drawn to Kansas City and the Territory of vampire Charles Morgan. Morgan, not a favorite within the Council, runs his territory with an iron fist, and any kind of depravity is allowed within its boundaries. Blood Slaves, those that get a high from the vampire’s bite, are all too common.

When Juliana gets sent undercover to find the murderer, it’s probably with a little too much gusto that she hooks into the case. She wants to prove to everyone (e.g. herself) that she’s still capable of doing the job and getting it done without anyone getting killed.

Kathleen Collins presents Juliana’s sense of loss and her own personal failure loud and clear throughout the whole story. Even without openly acknowledging why Juliana becomes so wrapped up in this case, her motivations her very apparent. She’s still grieving. Unfortunately it’s also Juliana’s determination to prove herself that causes her to take unnecessary risks: like lying to Thomas about where she’s going.

I have always liked Thomas Kendrick, but with Blood Slave that like turns into love. His devotion to Juliana is so clear. Even though he would rather she not run head first into danger, he still holds himself back from keeping her under lock and key. He knows that she’s capable of taking care of herself and of doing her job successfully. I like a man who knows to let his partner be herself. Juliana would never be happy sitting on the sidelines, and he respects that, albeit somewhat begrudgingly.

However misguided Juliana’s attempts at keeping her latest assignment from Thomas are, it’s very apparent that she cares for him just as much as he cares for her. At the end of Death’s Daughter we finally saw Juliana make a definitive decision regarding her and Thomas’s relationship. Not necessarily letting go of the past, because it will always be there, but deciding that her feelings for Thomas were stronger. I really felt like Juliana’s case and the mystery in Blood Slave did more to showcase who they can be as a couple. Moving past their rocky start at the beginning of the series, I like that they’ve formed a really solid relationship foundation. Even with the times they fight, I’d never be worried that they would choose to leave the other again. By having the characters become undoubtedly committed to each other early, Collins allows readers to see them grow throughout the remainder of the series, something I look forward to.

With the addition of Blood Slave, Realm Walker continues to be a really solid gem of a series. More please!

An Engaging Series
By Kindle Customer
As “Blood Slave” was just released today, and me being in the mood to read something of the paranormal nature, I got comfy and started reading. I was only a couple of chapters in when I realized that not only could I not remember everything that took place in the first novel, it might do me good to reacquaint myself with the characters before reading any further. So I read book one, “Realm Walker,” then moved onto book two, “Death’s Daughter.” Hey, it's only natural.

“Blood Slave,” book three in the “Realm Walker” series is a well-written paranormal-romance novel that includes a plethora of characters such as vampires, mage, fae, werewolves, and demons just to name a few. The hero of the story is Thomas, master vampire and mate to our heroine, Juliana, realm walker. I’ve liked Thomas since book one but have to say that by the end of this novel I absolutely loved him. His love, loyalty, dedication and everything else he feels for Juliana is so pure and true. I absolutely love that he’s always upfront about his feelings for her, and not just to show everyone his claim on her, but the way he’s able to show his love for her without actually having to say it. And as master vampire he is of course a sexy vamp. Yes, they have sex but it’s not very detailed (which is unfortunate). Juliana may be strong, smart, and courageous, not to mention knows how to kick ass, but I do appreciate how often her vulnerability comes to surface and her need for Thomas. Her love for him is also very strong, but I do wish she’d give him a little break as she always leaves him in constant worry about her. Like another reader mentioned, I don’t think the need to lie to him about her absence was necessary at all. It just feels like it’s always Thomas who shows how much he loves her, while she at times holds it close to her vest. Telling him she loves him is one thing, but letting him into her life fully would solidify it. What can I say except I’m a hopeless romantic, especially for a couple I’ve come to care for.

The “Realm Walker” series is a quick and light read, each novel that is sure to capture your attention. As it seems this is not the end of the series, I wouldn’t mind if we got to see Juliana rescue Thomas for a change. Also, I don’t think we’ve seen the last of Raoul DeSoto, enemy number one. I’m already looking forward to the next installment. Hopefully, I won’t have to wait too long.
