Pulled me in!

Historical icons and the post-apocalyptic future are fused together with the help of cloning technology and an added religious twist...This comic is all over the place in a way that I can enjoy and get sucked into. It's freaky, funny, fascinating, and vulgar, yet somehow all in good proportion.

I caught myself laughing when I least expected to, and I appreciate that balance of humor and drama. We're still being trickled little tid-bits about what happened to the old world in issue #2, and it leaves me curious and wanting to learn more. The art is truly fantastic and I caught myself gazing at the images for a while before flipping to the next page. Very well done! I am looking forward to the next issue!

Funny and offensive in just the right measure!

True to form, the comic book series remains as irreverent as ever, but I will admit that the more light hearted approach in this part of the story is a welcome change. From the Replika-type index in the first pages all the way to the arena-scene double-page splat, Voghan and case create a horrifying, weird but ultimately funny world.

I continue to consider the lack of any proper introduction into the story’s apocalyptic origins to be a sore point for the book and some of the references come off as forced. But the carnage is good and the humor is raunchier than ever. If you were looking for a cyberpunk Preacher substitute, then you got your match.

In my opinion it's such a weird but balanced combination. Futuristic, apocalyptic, cloning, history, Knights, gladiator fights, religion. All kinds of facets that is intriguing! It gives me food for thought about how far can mankind go on with science and be true to their religion. Can't wait for the end of the story! Very fascinating and awesome storytelling by Caesar Voghan, and the artwork is sublimely done by Justin Case.

About the author

Indira Parthasarathy is the nom de plume of Professor R Parthasarathy, a well known, contemporary Indian author writing in Tamil. He has received several awards for his writing, including some of the highest honours in the fields of Indian literature and performing arts. The prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademi and Sahitya Akademi awards and Saraswati Samman are among these. He has published several novels, anthologies of short stories, plays and essays. As an academician, he had a distinguished career in the Delhi, Warsaw (Poland) and Pondicherry Universities. As a visiting scholar at various Canadian Universities, he gave lectures on Indian philosophy and culture during the winter semester in 1985. A founder-director of the School of Performing Arts, Pondicherry University, he served there as Director of Culture for four years (1988-1992).

It's okay, however...

This book is pretty much a summary of KM Munshi's seven volume Krishnavatara. If you have that, you are wasting your time reading this. It is really unfortunate but this book might actually have been okay if it wasn't such a copy.

Elspeth Campbell Murphy, a former teacher, is the author of more than seventy-five books, including two best-selling series: Three Cousins Detective Club and the Young Cousins Mysteries. She and her husband live in Chicago, Illinois.

About the Author
A former first-grade teacher, Elspeth Campbell Murphy is the author of over 100 books for children, including the Three Cousins Detective Club chapter book series. I LOVE THIS BOOK!!

This little book offers heartfelt ENCOURAGEMENT to teachers--at a time when they need it perhaps more than ever before. Teaching is much more difficult than it was just a few years ago (the paperwork alone is a nightmare), and the meditations in this book can help teachers put things in perspective. As Bill Martin says (on the back cover), "This book will remind you that teaching is a high calling and a joy."

This book is exactly what every teacher needs to have on his or her desk. It's as if Mrs. Murphy has read the mind of every elementary teacher out there and written down a prayer for every situation! This book offers exactly what you need to get you through the day. If you do not have this book, GET IT! You certainly won't regret it. It is a book to which every teacher can truly relate. This book is uplifting and helpful. You will find yourself coming back to it again and again for inspiration and encouragement.

Love this book!

I first purchased a copy of Chalkdust for my son to give to a particularly helpful and kind teacher when he was in the 3rd grade. She told me it was the best gift she had ever received from a student. My son is now 32. I recently looked for the book again, this time for my niece who is a first year teacher. I found it without a problem at Amazon nearly 25 years later! It's a great book and has proven to be timeless. I highly recommend it to anyone who is an educator or has ever known that "special" teacher.

First published in 1986 and in print--and immensely popular--ever since, Open Mind, Open Heart, by the Trappist Monk Thomas Keating, remains one of the best introductions to a specifically Christian form of meditation. Father Keating gives the reader an overview of what contemplative prayer both is and isn't; he discusses the history of contemplative prayer in the Christian tradition and then explores step by step the process of Centering Prayer, briefly exploring its origins in the ancient church and then demonstrating its use as "a sign of one's intention" to surrender to God. Each chapter concludes with questions and answers that provide useful information in an informal context. Here in particular we get a sense of Keating's clarity--and his sense of humor. About the Author
Father Thomas Keating is known throughout the world as an exponent, teacher, and writer on contemplative prayer. A Cistercian (Trappist) monk of St. Benedict's Monastery, Snowmass, Colorado, he is a founder of the Centering Prayer Movement and of Contemplative Outreach. He is the author of numerous books, particularly of the trilogy Open Mind, Open Heart; Invitation to Love; and The Mystery of Christ. Among his most recent books is The Daily Reader for Contemplative Living, compiled by S. Stephanie Iachetta.

Excellent Guide for Contemplative Prayer

The concepts of "centering prayer" and "contemplative prayer" are difficult for many of us who are used to activity and busy-ness in our daily lives. Thomas Keating, a Cistercian, outlines the traditions and gives a practical (if that is possible) guide to the benefits and the methods of integrating this into our daily lives.
Following a brief discussion of the history of this type of prayer, the author lucidly explains the nature of contemplative prayer and concludes with an understanding of the contemplative nature of the Gospels. Allowing oneself to free the mind of distractions and "rest in God's presence" is a difficult and ongoing process, however Keating offers words of encouragement and understanding so that we realize that this type of prayer, like all types of prayer is not an end in itself, but is a journey.
As one attempts to develop a deeper more significant relationship with God, this book is an invaluable resource. It is worth reading and referring to repeatedly as a guide in prayer, but also in reading Scripture.

A fresh organization

For those of you who have read the original edition of this book over the last twenty years, I think you will be pleased, as I am, with the reorganization and clarifying language that is in the 20th Anniversary edition. Because this is a book that one reads every year or two, it is well worth the small investment to purchase this refined, fresh organization and clarity of statements. For those of you who were hoping for inclusive language - sorry, at age 84 I can appreciate that inclusive language for God is a stretch too far. However, in his recent talks, Fr. Keating is care-filled to accommodate those for whom masculine pronouns for God are an offense.

I read this book because I wanted a deeper understanding of an open mind having lived through enough priest abuse to last several lifetimes. As soon as I read the negative reviews, I had a feeling that Keating had gone beyond the ignorance of the views held toward him by the ignorant and those reviews helped me to choose reading this book. After all, the title is "Open Mind, Open Heart." Perhaps all that is missing is the asterisk (*); unless you can't. All lives matter. If I read only what you want me to read then I'll be just like you- how's that going to work out?

Campbell (Brothers and Sisters) here tells the story of Hosanna Clark, a black maid in a Los Angeles hotel, and her surprising relationship with Gilda, a white Jewish migr e from Poland. Just after World War II, the women join forces to promote a hand lotion that Gilda makes, with Gilda managing the financial end of their newborn partnership and Hosanna hustling the product. But just as they quit their jobs to make cosmetics for black women full time, Gilda disappears, as does all the cash in their joint bank account. Gilda starts her own cosmetics company, which brings her both fame and fortune, and Hosanna passes her jealousy, anger, and thirst for revenge on to her daughter, Matriece. Matriece goes to work for Gilda after Hosannah dies, with unfocused plans for revenge, but the crisis is unexpectedly resolved, with a happy ending for everyone. Campbell freights her story with ethical and religious messages and abundant black/white and parent/child conflicts it cannot quite sustain. Though the characters are well drawn, they are stereotypical, and their dialog is thin and somewhat stilted. Bland & Too Long

I have to preface this review by saying that Bebe Moore Campbell is one of my all-time favorite authors and I LOVED her other novels. But this is by far her worst. First of all there are too many subplots that are unnecessary to the the central story. Not to say that they aren't intriguing, however, she would have been better off leaving them out and using them as plots for another novel. While they do all somehow tie together, they don't tie together in a relevant way. The central plot is about the betrayal of a black woman named Hosanna who started a cosmetics company with a while, jewish woman named Gilda in the late 1940s. Gilda ends up disappearing and runs off with the money that they both earned and eventually builds a cosmetics empire of her own. Hosanna's anger and pain is passed down to her daughter Matriece who goes to work for Gilda and vows to eventually collect what was owed to her mother. If Campbell had focused solely on this theme, without delving off on tangents involving her relationships with her long lost father, or her relationship with her nephew and sister's family, I think the novel would have been better served. As I said, these subplots were interesting, but perhaps she could have saved them for another book, or perhaps a sequel to this one.
The characters were thin and stereotypical: the deadbeat dad; the famous, lonely and unhappy rock star; the son & daughter who feel overshadowed by their powerful father and mother, etc. This book could have be tighter by losing 200 pages. I hate to criticize any of Campbell's books because she is so talented. So on that note, I will HIGHLY recommend reading some her earlier works like "Your Blues Ain't Like Mine", "Brothers & Sisters", and "Singing in the Comeback Choir." Those are GREAT books. ...

A Great Novel With a Great Lesson

This novel was a bit lengthy, but don�t let it dissuade you from reading it. It was a very enjoyable read spanning three generations and fifty years. In the early part of the novel, the two primary characters, Hosanna Clark and Gilda Rosenstein, one black, one Jewish form a friendship and business only to end in Gilda betraying Hosanna. The remainder of the story includes an interesting cast of characters who are largely members and friends of both families including one of Hosanna�s daughters (Matriece �Triesey� Carter) who learn of Gilda�s perfidy from their mother and feels obligated to right the wrongs done to her mother. The plot thickens as the history, hidden agendas, and background of the characters are revealed. Without revealing too much�there were lessons to be learned in the lives of these characters�the pain of vengeance, peace of atonement, and the power of forgiveness. Campbell crossed race and socio-economic lines to bring life to a great novel.
Although some parts were slow and in this reader�s opinion I think it could have been shortened, this was a true page-turner, especially in the last 1/3 of the book. You'll leave with a message that we all need to consider...

Worth the Read - Can't Believe It's Fiction

I purchased this book when it was first released and put the book down by page 50 because it starts slow. The hardcover edition is 500+ pages.
During Thanksgiving break 2002, I started reading the book again and couldn't believe I put it down a year earlier. The story of Hosanna (black Texan farm girl) and Gilda (Jewish Holocaust survivor) friendship/partnership is remarkable. The legacy that Hosanna passes on to her daughter regarding the betrayed friendship/partnership is even better. "What You Owe Me" displays how people can miss out on many of life's blessings when they are plagued by guilt or too determine to get revenge. This book is an emotional rollercoaster (tears, anger, laughter, heartbreak, insecurity, extreme confidence, etc.) I would love to see this book made into a movie!

Universe twisting technology and threats abound

Vaughn Heppner in "The Lost Patrol" continues to move the saga of Captain Maddox into new directions, introducing new characters and enemies. As if our captain didn't have enough trouble already. The fifth volume of the Lost Starship Series begins with Maddox making a free fall into space just for kicks. But this is Maddox, a guy who's half New Man and has saved the earth from certain annihilation. Immediately he's set upon by two separate assassination teams and meets up with the Spacers, a secretive and highly technically capable group rumored to have ties to the mysterious Builders. He meets an old woman Spacer, the Visionary, and she dubs him the "di-far," which means something like a playmaker in the universe. Maddox then takes on Shu 15, a Spacer he rescues. She's very thankful for her life and seems devoted, at first. But like all Heppner stories, there's more going on in the background. Allies can turn, and Shu 15 once tried to kill him in a past book in the series. This time Maddox sets out on probably his least favorite assignment with the ancient alien-built ship and its AI Galyan. He must find the dreaded Swarm Imperium. Maddox brings the professor, who hates Shu. Heppner creates all sorts of conflict, and it appears many times that this may be the final voyage of Maddox and crew. The threats and challenges pose a tremendous barrier to the mission's success, and the androids, who tried to kill Maddox early on in this volume, remain a threat. Maddox and company get little aid. What I enjoy most is how this motley crew pull a semblance of success from near impossible odds, and Heppner puts his imagination into overdrive to make Maddox's journey one hell of a ride.

too many derivative concepts, offset by very good writing and decent character development

One star removed for doubling down on the insectoid theme (there are two of them now), and punting on the Builders. There is some development of the hero, though he becomes too cocky, and there might be a hint of development in Luddendorf. Or maybe not. We'll see. That would be interesting. Also a hint of development among the robots, however this much is very Asimovian and therefore derivative, with two factions of robots, one sometimes "helping" humans but remaining secret, etc. However, the other faction is non-Asimovian (neither explained nor very interesting, either). Some loose ends as the fate of the kidnapped engineer in the prologue is never revealed. And the fate of the Builders is right out of StarGate SG-1. The writing, however, is as good as the first in the series, very entertaining, so I gave it a positive rating.

A Must Read Story: Great Action, Deeper Lore, and a good dose of humor :)

Five stars for me. The writing continues to improve; This 5th book in the series has a great balance of humor mixed in with serious story and action. There is continued character building of a few of the main characters, with substantial insertions of other important actors. The best part is a significant broadening of scope and lore for the Lost Starship Series universe. I tend to 'savor' books over time but this 5th installment I could not put down*.

This is a great book in a great series; Let's hope Vaughn Heppner is a Methuselah man so this can continue for a while :).

* For reference and comparison, (months later) I am still struggling to get started with the 4th book in the Expanse series.

In this chapter you will learn how blackouts occur and how we can prevent them. You will also learn the major sections of the Energy Policy Act of 2005 (most of which relate to reliability). 10.7 Smart Grids Chapter seven discusses “Smart Grids”. There are numerous technologies associated with the term “smart grid”, therefore chapter seven begins with an overview of smart grids, followed by an overview of smart grid technologies. Much of this chapter is devoted to the proper and improper uses of smart grid technologies. 10.8 The Future of Electrical Distribution The final chapter discusses the future of electrical distribution. This is a very important chapter because the paths we take when developing power distribution systems will affect our safety, reliability, and economic security for many years. Therefore, this chapter explains the visions for the future of electrical distribution, followed by detailed descriptions. This chapter also discusses some additional features which are valuable for the ideal future of electrical distribution.

I thought this was an interesting book. It was a little dull at some points, but I learned a lot about the grid that I never even thought about.

Far Too Negative on Nuclear Power which emits no CO2

The author covered very negative subjects on the one energy source that could displace the Big Gorilla - fossil fuel, and that is nuclear power. I know the fossil fuel industry through people like the Koch brothers pay scientists and writers to put out negative information about nuclear power to insure they will never take over from fossil fuel, even though they are clean, smoke and soot-free and do not emit CO2. It would be good to hear the author come clean about whether his negatives views of nuclear were inspired by fossil fuel money.

Just Okay... Book has many grammatical errors ...

Just Okay... Book has many grammatical errors and does lots of content repeating. It reads as if the author did lots of Wikipedia research then summarized. If you know nothing about the electrical industry, you may glean some understanding, yet there are several other books that will instill concepts and understanding. Save your money on this one...
