cool book that teaches the main/fundamentals of FEA flow sims/calcs.......most of the projects in the book repeats itself w the same FEA process of project set-up to close-out. In each chapter it jumps right in to start the project w little wording on the background of the chapter topic. I do suggest adding some youtube videos to help fill out this book I general.

Too much reliance on anecdote to prove its points

Charles Duhigg is a good journalist (his share of a Pulitzer Prize proves that), and his book Smarter Faster Better is a good read. I enjoyed reading it. It's inspiring and insightful.

But the book promises to be more than just entertainment. The title takes off the Olympic motto: Citius Altius Fortius (Faster Higher Stronger), and its cover shows a runner smartly running directly to the center of a maze. A self-help, self-improvement type of book, it promises "the secrets of being productive in life and business". That I don't think the book delivers.

Why not? The book is full of stories. Anecdotes. Case studies. Whatever you want to call them. Charles Duhigg researches a lot of disparate incidents involving various people, and tries to bring them together to show us how to draw on other people's experiences to be more productive. But he fails.

That's because you can pull out of anecdotes pretty much anything you want to. I can find an anecdote to support any argument I want to make. Anecdotes are like statistics. As Simpson's paradox says, often the same statistics can be used to show something and its exact opposite. The same with anecdotes.

Take Charles Duhigg's use of the life of Rosa Parks in his book The Power of Habit. He says that she shows the power of social habits. He tells of how her husband said she was so social she rarely ate dinner at home, instead eating at the home of friends. That gave her the social strength to start a movement.

But Susan Cain (a blurber for this book) in her book Quiet, tells the story of Rosa Parks to support her argument of the power of introverts. While extroverts tend to gain their energy in social situations, introverts typically recharge through solitude and feel drained from too much stimulation. The same person, but one author sees her as a social butterfly and another as an introvert who sought solitude.

That's not to say that Charles Duhigg or Susan Cain is wrong. And I don't want to push this example too strongly. But I do think that many authors, and most TED talk speakers, depend too much on anecdote and story telling to persuade, while they would do better to just entertain. I have no problem using anecdotes to pump people up. But to try to derive secrets from them seems a step too far.

Take another example, this one from this book. Charles Duhigg uses the example of the 2009 Air France Flight 447 jetliner crash in the Atlantic as an example of "cognitive tunneling" and poor mental models. In that tragic accident, the Airbus A330 plane was flying from Rio de Janeiro to Paris and ran into bad weather. The plane was flying fine, but its pitot tubes apparently froze up and gave the pilots the wrong speed information. They acted on that wrong information, put the plane into a stall, and fell into the ocean.

But does that anecdote unequivocally show cognitive tunneling? And can one take from that anecdote a lesson about how not to cognitively tunnel? I don't see how. I've read several other accounts of that Air France accident, and none of them blamed it on cognitive tunneling (although one did mention tunnel vision as one of many factors).

The Air France accident seems to me more like what Charles Perrow described in Normal Accidents: Living With High-Risk Technologies. Just like with the nuclear accident at Three Mile Island, people do not do well when their instruments lie to them about situations they cannot see with their eyes. Another account blames the Air France accident mainly on over-reliance on automated systems in the Airbus planes. (William Langewiesche's article in Vanity Fair is fascinating reading.)

My point is that any anecdote can, by its nature, be interpreted in many different ways. Just like in the old fable six blind men saw six different things in an elephant. None were wrong, yet none were right.

Rather than books like this one, I prefer my anecdotes in the form of biographies. When I read a good biography, or a good history, the author presents a life or a series of stories in a way that the reader can draw their own conclusions. I'm sure the author's slant comes through to some extent.

But when I read a book by someone like David Halberstam or David McCullough, I usually feel as though I read a gem that provides lessons for my life. I didn't get that with this book. To me, at least, it seemed too shallow, too broad, and too pushy. Not deep, focused, and subtle.

The book's good points get buried and forgotten in an epic flood of words

A brief warning to busy and smart people: the book contains some interesting insights and pieces of valuable advice. But, in the tradition of most self-help books, its worthwhile points could be communicated in a book 70 to 80 percent shorter. It is just unbelievably tedious with runaway background information and stories. It contains so much superfluous material that it is actually painful to listen to. And the good points get buried and forgotten in a flood of words. I normally prefer unabridged versions of books but this one begs for a most severe abridgement.

Absolutely loved this book- I'm a sucker for books on productivity

Absolutely loved this book- I'm a sucker for books on productivity, but this was one of the best in awhile. Duhigg is a great storyteller and builds suspense as you read through the anecdotes in each chapter, anxiously awaiting the wisdom that can be gleaned from each one. Unlike many books, Duhigg doesn't just proselytize general aphorisms about how to be efficient but gives very concrete examples and advice - for example, outlining how to set very detailed and precise goals and keep yourself motivated. About the Author
Eric J. Simon is an associate professor of Department of Biology and Health Science at New England College in Henniker, New Hampshire. He teaches introductory biology to science majors and nonscience majors, as well as upper-level courses in genetics, microbiology, tropical marine biology, and molecular biology. Dr. Simon received a B.A. in biology and computer science and an M.A. in biology from Wesleyan University and a Ph.D. in biochemistry from Harvard University. His research focuses on innovative ways to use technology to improve teaching and learning in the science classroom, particularly for nonscience majors. He is the coauthor of Campbell Biology: Concepts and Connections, Seventh Edition.

Jane B. Reece has worked in biology publishing since 1978, when she joined the editorial staff of Benjamin Cummings. Her education includes an A.B. in biology from Harvard University (where she was initially a philosophy major), an M.S. in microbiology from Rutgers University, and a Ph.D. in bacteriology from the University of California, Berkeley. At UC Berkeley and later as a postdoctoral fellow in genetics at Stanford University, her research focused on genetic recombination in bacteria. Dr. Reece taught biology at Middlesex County College (New Jersey) and Queensborough Community College (New York). During her twelve years as an editor, she played a major role in a number of successful textbooks. She is the lead author of Campbell Biology, Ninth Edition and Campbell Biology: Concepts & Connections, Seventh Edition.

Jean L. Dickey is a professor of biology at Clemson University. She had no idea that science was interesting until her senior year in high school, when a scheduling problem landed her in advanced biology. Abandoning plans to study English or foreign languages, she enrolled in Kent State University as a biology major. After receiving her B.S. in biology, she went on to earn a Ph.D. in ecology and evolution from Purdue University. Since joining the faculty at Clemson in 1984, Dr. Dickey has specialized in teaching nonscience majors, including a course designed for pre-service elementary teachers and workshops for in-service teachers. She also developed an investigative laboratory curriculum for general biology. Dr. Dickey is the author of Laboratory Investigations for Biology, Second Edition, and is a coauthor of Campbell Biology: Concepts & Connections, Seventh Edition.

About the Author
James S. Walker James Walker obtained his Ph.D. in theoretical physics from the University of Washington in 1978. He subsequently served as a post-doc at the University of Pennsylvania, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and the University of California at San Diego before joining the physics faculty at Washington State University in 1983. Professor Walker's research interests include statistical mechanics, critical phenomena, and chaos. His many publications on the application of renormalization-group theory to systems ranging from absorbed monolayers to binary-fluid mixtures have appeared in "Physical Review, Physical Review Letters, Physica," and a host of other publications. He has also participated in observations on the summit of Mauna Kea, looking for evidence of extra-solar planets. Jim Walker likes to work with students at all levels, from judging elementary school science fairs to writing research papers with graduate students, and has taught introductory physics for many years. His enjoyment of this course and his empathy for students have earned him a reputation as an innovative, enthusiastic, and effective teacher. Jim's educational publications include "Reappearing Phases" ("Scientific American, "May 1987) as well as articles in the "American Journal of Physics "and "The Physics Teacher," In recognition of his contributions to the teaching of physics, Jim was named Boeing Distinguished Professor of Science and Mathematics Education for 2001-2003. When he is not writing, conducting research, teaching, or developing new classroom demonstrations and pedagogical materials, Jim enjoys amateur astronomy, bird watching, photography, juggling, unicycling, boogie boarding, and kayaking. Jim is also an avid jazz pianist and organist. He has served as ballpark organist for several Class A minor league baseball teams, including minor league affiliates of the Seattle Mariners and San Francisco Giants.

What a great read! Sadhguru puts so many things into perspective and answers so many of life's questions in a simple yet informative way that it really makes you feel like you understand your surroundings that much better. His unique style of simplicity and humor makes him easy and very enjoyable to read. I recommend this book to anyone who is questioning anything in this world and why things are the way they are and perhaps why people act the way they do. If only everyone read this book maybe people would "get it" and this world would be a better place!

This is a wonderful book. The book provides a comprehensive treatment of inequalities. It also contains a wealth of examples and exercises with full solutions. This will be a treasure trove for any student planning to participate in Mathematics competitions and also to their trainers The author has done a good service by collecting all the important inequalities in one volume.

Wonderfully Up to Date Book on a Key Math Topic

It's interesting how different disciplines look differently at inequalities. In education, they are most often associated with the math Olympiads as some of the most difficult problems for K-12 students, as well as undergrads. In these fields, the boundaries are stated algebraically. In business, economics, physics, engineering and many other areas of applied math, they are associated with optimization, boundary values, symmetry and many other solutions. Those advanced applications involve calculus, ODEs and PDEs.

The "other" outstanding book on inequalities explicitly mentions the Olympiads, but also is filled with other practical applications, proofs and theories: Inequalities: A Mathematical Olympiad Approach.

If you love math in general, you'll love this book for it's beauty and many astonishing insights about how important inequalities are. Life, whether balancing your checkbook or watching a movie, is most exciting when the "keep it close" rule is followed-- like a close game being more nail biting than a blow out. "Almost" is the essence of inequalities, and they are found much more often in "real" life than a = b. After all, "boundaries" are the essence of duality, and reward is most amazing at the ragged brink of risk, since they are holistically inseparable when you consider boundary solutions, or zen, depending on your POV.

So, if you're into the Olympiads, this is a must. Even if not, you'll enjoy both the elegance of the proofs and the beauty of the underlying logic. For advanced readers, some proofs presented in this and the Olympiad book can be found nowhere else-- these are a couple of gems on a topic without a lot of recent coverage except in journals. Elaine C. Kamarck is lecturer in public policy at Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government and senior fellow at the Brookings Institution. Previously, she was a senior policy adviser to the Clinton administration and a political columnist for Newsday and the Los Angeles Times. She is author of The End of Government ... As We Know It: Making Public Policy Work.

Surprisingly easy to read.

Interesting and insightful. An insider's view of how policy is made. It will probably be a text for government classes but is a very good read for the non student as we'll. I especially enjoyed the case histories.

Brilliant, Useful Blend of Theory & Narrative

Everyone has opinions about what government "should do" and many people spend a lot of their lives trying to make a difference. And yet change is frustratingly slow and sometimes misdirected. How do things change at the federal government level?

Elaine Kamarck provides a fantastic resource and tool for anyone who wants to understand this and even more so for anyone who want to try to catalyze change. From her unique blend of academic and intellectual cred (PhD from Berkeley, professor at Harvard's Kennedy School and now head of a Center at Brookings Institution) and street cred (Al Gore's policy advisor, central role leading the Clinton-Gore Reinventing Government initiative, co-founding intellectual of the New Democrat movement and political player for over thirty years), she provides plenty of cogent theory and plenty of compelling anecdotal examples to make it real,

While many academics know the literature and theory, they rarely have any realistic sense of what happens behind the closed doors of the White House and Congress. And while memoirs of leading political figures tell lots of stories, they rarely provide any sound framework to help connect the patterns and suggest the ways one can succeed. Kamarck brings that very rare combination of both perspectives and she is concise enough to get it done in less than 150 pages!

Students of government and political science will find both the summary of theory and the killer examples they want and advocates and practitioners will find useful guidelines to prompt their thinking about how they might best proceed.
