Inconsistency Kills
By Amazon Customer
I wanted to like this book more but I just couldn't, despite my best efforts.

The driving force for Dale's behavior in book 1 is how financially destitute he is after his home is destroyed by Atmosphero. This desperation is what leads him to being a willing participant with Dr. Retcon. Suddenly, in this book his has approximately ten million dollars squirreled away. Now, this money didn't come from Dr. Retcon, because that money was specifically handled by his attorney, and this new money was specifically NOT known about by the attorney.

They decide that in this book Blackjack needs to be taught how to fight, again. Apogee starts to talk trash about Lord Mighty, he was frail, he was tired, she'd have taken him out in three seconds. In book two she meets up with Lord Mighty and he breaks one of her hands... in about three seconds. He's going to break the other one but Blackjack bites off one of his ears. So... yeah.

There are multiple instances where this book just loses continuity and consistency. Throughout the series it seems like changes were made to previous chapters that they then forgot to trickle down through later sections that were already written.

Princess Armada is stated clearly to come from "Rome's gilded age", and her spear is blessed by all the "Roman gods", and later on she's shouting Greek battle cries. Rome and Greece are not the same place geographically and they were quite separated in age as well.

This entire series would benefit greatly from a content editor's input and being cleaned up.

1st absolutely scathing review.
By Gregory Malcolm
This book.... Okay. I've read the other two, really enjoyed them, and thought the idea, especially of Shard World, was spot on. The editing in those books were also solid, didn't have tense and plural issues, and I found them all easy enough to enter the world that Ben created.
This book was horrid. Absolutely wretched. With the money you are making from the book, Ben, pay an editor to edit the book please. There are constant, consistent grammar errors on literally every single page. The sheer volume of errors made it nearly unreadable. The content was waning to the point that at 30 percent of the way through the book, I was wondering how there could be another 70 percent.

It was painful. I hope it didn't ruin Blackjack and can still revert back to the way it originally was. But it was damn close. If I didn't care about what happened to the main character enough, I would've stopped reading and demanded a refund. That anybody could actually publish this....

Did you even read your own writing? The errors are so obvious it feels like you would just go into 24 hour periods of writing and two or three chapters would magically appear, then you would retreat back into the real world, only to reappear months later without re-reading your previous works. Seriously, proofreading is a skill, maybe even an art, and if not used properly anything else becomes trash. As an editor it was incredibly difficult to read.

Finally, and this is important, stop making Apogee so one dimensional. You treat women in this genre like they have no character development, like Blackjack's sole purpose for surviving is because of this woman and their abhorrent relationship just because she has boobs. You used to be a good writer. You used to have character development. I believe it's still possible. Dig deep, give me better stuff to go off of, or I will quit on your series with the next book.

Blackjack: Brain-dead and barely alive.

Ignore the fan boy reviews. This book is so stupid it's an insult to readers. Warning! Spoilers galore ahead!

After escaping from custody, Blackjack uses some of his hidden funds to book a flight to Europe, where he can hide. On the flight, he does what any moron would do: he boasts of who he is to a beautiful passenger! Not only does the passenger not panic, she empathizes with the wanted murderer (it was an accident, if you read the series), and she just happens to be a lawyer who helps him obtain illegal ID! This was so stupid that I almost stopped reading here. I didn't, but it would have been better if I had. This touches on a major pet peeve: the stupid protagonist.

After setting up in Romania, he decides to build a set of intelligent machines to help him build a trap for Mr. Haha, an artificial intelligence who has tried to kill him. Blackjack deals with the local criminals to build his machines. Remember that he's still a wanted super villain and trying to remain hidden. He reveals his superhuman status by casually lifting items weighing tons. Again, the idiot protagonist. The book portrays Blackjack as a genius level inventor. His machines are able to build a replica castle out of advanced polymers in a day! So what does this "genius" do? He reveals his existence on social media! This leads to a threat to his remaining family, which he has to deal with prior to finishing his trap. The book tries to make excuses for his idiocy. He realizes how foolish and arrogant he was afterwards, but the protagonist's awareness of his stupidity is not absolution of it. The final idiocy? Blackjack's trap succeeds, but he decides to free Mr. Haha, previously described as amoral and deadly because they are both "outsiders." Baloney!

Other problems: Blackjack has fought, and beaten, heavyweight superheroes like Epic and Lord Mighty, but he continually gets his butt kicked by nobodies. The book goes on and on about how he's become tougher and even more powerful than before, but it doesn't show. I'm not joking about what follows. Blackjack tangles with Epic's team and a female brawler in particular. He gets his butt handed to him and "wins" because she breaks her arm hitting him! His face beats up her hand! It's so stupid that it's hilarious! Other problems: he remains guilt-ridden over the death he caused and whiny over Apogee, his super heroine love interest. The authors are trying to add some emotional depth to the character, but it doesn't work. After 3 books, the reader wants the character to progress. How about he decides to stop wallowing in guilt and just do better? Yes, I know people take a long time to get over things in real life, but that's why one is called "real life" and the other is called "fiction."

Overall: It may not sound like it, but I love the Blackjack series. I'm hard on this book because I'm so disappointed. There's a lack of imagination in this book. One of the recurring themes is hypocrisy and injustice in the "justice" system. Super humans who've done as bad or worse than Blackjack are pardoned and even work as super heroes. Remember that Blackjack is portrayed as a genius with the ability to make billions through his inventions. So why doesn't he take a page out of "real life"? Make billions and buy a pardon just like all the other criminals, I mean philanthropists. I hope the next book is better.
