Shooting at the Navy Yard: One Survivor's Memoir, by Laurel Myers

"911, what is your emergency?", the operator said in a calm voice as gunshots rained down on victims from the fourth floor in Building 197 at the Washington Navy Yard September 16, 2013. Amidst the chaos, hundreds of workers fled for their lives. Those who weren't hit by the shooter's initial shots were quickly engulfed by the terror that followed. In Shooting at the Navy Yard, author Laurel Myers offers a firsthand account of the shooting spree that occurred that day and provides insight into the aftermath, including her challenges with post traumatic stress disorder. More of a work of fiction or factual inaccuracies.
By Caerulata
Should be rated a "zero stars." As a U.S. Navy civilian employee, I find it hard to believe that the writer got permission to write this story. I am sure it was not reviewed or vetted by NAVSEA leadership. Her story is hard to follow and she rambles on with little or no organization. She restates things over and over in subsequent chapters. Her "facts" are inaccurate. She is wrong on many of her statements. She also does not know that there were over 900 law enforcement personnel who responded. Not just NCIS and the FBI. She does not seem to know that it was a Park Police and Metro PD police officer who eventually neutralized Alexis. She is I also flawed in her knowledge of the NAVSEA contracted security guards and the Naval District Washington (NDW) police. She confuses the two separate entities. Don't waste you money on this. Go search for factual account online.

A Must Read Book that Tells What Really Went on Inside Building 197 During the Navy Yard Shooting
By JDTCGAL
This is a unique perspective of how complacency can overtake our lives in the worst way. The shooter managed to elude the watchful eyes of the guards as he entered the building; and we find out now he may have had that shotgun under his arm and down his side, or in pieces in his athletic bag. Either way, his demeanor didn't give his intent away to anyone he passed that morning until after he was armed and dangerous. Being in the middle of things gives one a chance to "see" or hear what is going on and what is being said, both by the shooter and by his prey as he searched out his victims. The building cameras inside didn't catch what he said, but those of us on the fourth floor did. By breaking those initial minutes into separate chapters, the reader gets an intimate view of what those of us in harm's way were going through, as we were in a deeply personal relationship with the others around us. Knowing the police were following the directions being given to the 911 Operator, and to their liaison standing near her, we had faith they would find the shooter, even though it was obvious he knew his way around Building 197. Whether their were 50 law enforcement officers inside, or 900 didn't matter to us. We only knew that the police identified themselves to the shooter and told him to put his hands up at least three times. As we thought about this, we had to wonder why the protocol didn't change as he continued to respond to each request with gunfire, then run away, only to disappear from them again. After each encounter with the police, we heard single shots in the distance, surmising yet more people were being shot. With tears in our eyes, we wondered why the police didn't do what the shooter was doing to someone else right then. When the police finally followed him into the room on the third floor and had their "gunbattle" with him, I can say for certainty there weren't 900 law enforcement officers in that room or in the building. They would have been running all over each other if there were. However, in one of the chapters it is noted that there were officers every 12 feet pointing evacuees along the path to a sanctuary building that was delineated to hold people until the siege was over and next steps were to be determined. The horror of being in the middle of a floor of cubicles when a shotgun is being wielded at people around you shouldn't be lost on anyone, and as the air filled with spent gunpowder that stayed afloat the whole hour, it was a reminder of our losses that day, even though we didn't yet know who had been killed. Yes, we saw our miracles too; a group of people on the stairs and only one person wounded, a group of ladies trying to get to the elevators and caught by the shooter, yet not one shot fired, just screams and running footfalls, the training coordinator who was shot at and missed from just four feet away. Let's face it, everything that happened could have been written as a chronological listing of events, but that just might have been boring. After all, there were times when nothing was going on because the shooter was missing for a while. Perhaps the writing style isn't to some people's liking, but it did bring the reader back to the moment that the writer wanted to focus on in each Chapter. I give it 5 stars not just because of the fact that the writer brought the reader back to the point she wanted the reader to focus on, but because she brought her daughter into the story. This told readers that as far away as Ft. Rucker, an Army Post, an exercise was planned because of the Navy Yard Shooting, and daughter asked mother for some failures in the event, that she can present to her group at Ft. Rucker. Since that time, we've heard of several other Army and Navy installations that have run active shooter exercises, incorporating lessons from our failures.
