Good tips

This book wasn't exactly what I was looking for because I wanted a lot more step-by-step instruction (I'm painting with acrylics for the first time) but there were a lot of helpful tips and I liked seeing the four stages of paintings...drawing, painting, awkward stage and finish.

My favorite tip from the book is "Don't Quit Too Soon" referring to the "awkward" stage. He wrote that "many beginning artists have a tendency to give up" (at this stage). I could relate to that because I almost gave up on an early painting but decided to persevere if it took forever. I'm so glad I did because I love the way it turned out.

All things considered, I'm very glad I bought the book.

Great book for those interested in painting.

This my second book from this author and I really like her way of outlining the start, mid point and finished art pictures. She provided more information then I presently have from previous work I've done in painting, and so I thought it deserved five stars. The best thing was finding it in kindle format so I'll always be able to refer back to it on any of my devises anywhere.

Good Self-help Book

I am really enjoying this book. It illustrates some of the different techniques used by Lee Hammond. I am taking some local art classes, and this book gives me some interesting projects to work on at home. Even the simple example of making a round ball or shere look three-dimensional is helpful to a new painter and is not as easy as it looks. She stresses that there is an "Awkward Stage" in any painting, and she points this stage out in each of the projects in the book. This has helped and encouraged me to give my paintings the final details needed to make my paintings more realistic.

Andrew Carter was born in 1939 into a Leicestershire family of tower and handbell ringers. Following a music degree at the University of Leeds, he joined York Minster Choir, and was subsequently Director of Music at the Bar Convent Grammar School, where he achieved his first successes as a choir trainer. His wealth of experience of directing both mixed-voice and upper-voice choirs has given him a deep understanding of the voice, expressed by a lyricism and sense of drama underpinned by distinctive, often bitter-sweet harmonies. His vast collection of anthems and Christmas carols, together with a substantial number of large-scale choral works, have earned him a reputation as one of Britain's most respected contemporary choral composers.

Dostoevski is always great. When they first translated him, it is said that they edited him down to the story line, cutting out of his philosophical ideas. In Bros Karamazov, he said he was going to put in all his ideas, even if it ruined the story. His ideas, his view of reality is what makes the story, and makes it great.

Its not a book about sex and violence. The murder of Karamazov is about the failure of moral feeling in a man who has been overcome by his own philosophical maze. The 'violence' is the physical expression of something much worse, a man who is loosing his soul in the 'modern' world.

You really feel like Serena is welcoming you into her life, as if you're sitting down beside an old friend, having a cup of coffee and listening to her reminisce. This "stylized"porn memoir reflects well the era it discusses. Serena was not so much famous,but notorious
for her various sexual proclivities,especially when appearing on film and in live stage shows with her real-
world live-in partner,the late Jamie Gillis. It is not a story told straightforwardly. But, it is a pretty accurate
depiction of the mores that characterized the adult film world of 40 years ago,and so stands as valuable
reportage.

A television aerial made out of forks and a lamp made of aeroplane parts; a plastic colander mended in four different places; one shovel that recycles a `men at work' sign and another, the handle of a crutch; DIY sink-plungers, DIY torches, mudflaps, waffle-irons, telephones... These are a few of the `thingamyjigs' to be found in Vladimir Arkhipov's delightful `Home-Made', a sort of Blue Peter extravaganza of the Brezhnev era.
This small book, with it's colour photographs of funny, crudely made objects and short accompanying texts, achieves something matched by few conventional histories - a vivid and moving picture of real life behind the Iron Curtain. The shortages throughout the Soviet era and the Yeltsin years were, of course, the original impetus for much of this ingenuity. After the war there was terrible need, as the pathetic tools and rat-traps made during that time testify. Under Brezhnev, a version of communism was achieved in which money was more or less meaningless; there was not enough in the shops for people to spend their roubles on. Instead they relied on barter and complicated personal networks, friends who could weld metal or supply parts.
On the one hand, the `home-made' phenomenon is a lesson in why the Soviet economy collapsed - everyone was pilfering, not to mention spending their workdays doing their own and others' DIY. Arkhipov suggests that the activity was a direct response to life in the an oppresive state: `Each person who can make something with his hands prefers to make something small and concrete rather than uniting with others to change lives'.
On the other hand, to us living in the disposable age, Arkhipov's collection is something of a vindication of the Soviet Unions anti-consumerism. Each of these objects, however basic, is important. First it's creator had to search around for the materials, barter for them or recognise them in a punctured child's ball or a broken watch-strap. Then it was laboured over, perfected through a series of experiments. Finally it was used and used until it became worn by use. By this time the most mundane artifact is, as you can imagine, a matter for pride and affection. It is almost an heirloom.
Many of the objects are purely functional. But many, perhaps the majority, are not so practical. They are expressions of their creators' passions - rock climbing pegs and fishing reels, toys and tapedecks. Some reveal DIY geniuses for whom the pleasure was in the production itself, like the author's father who fashioned a radio out of a soap dish, flashing Christmas lights and a heat chamber for making rubber car parts. One that seemed to have a particularly Russian charm was a combination of pen and torch. `This,' says the inventor, `is connected with that romantic poetical period in a young man's life when the muse only takes it upon herself to visit him at night... You hold it under the pillow and use it for all your youthful musings'.
In the preface, Susan B Glasser, a Washington Post journalist, mentions a home-made radio `round which the family would huddle, listening to Voice of America', the forks bought `because the Soviet Union was about to collapse and there was nothing else for sale'. Like many Westerners, she seems convinced that everyday life in the USSR - unlike in the US or Europe - revolved entirely around the political situation. Yet one of the most pleasing things about this book is the light it sheds on Soviet citizens' real preoccupations - how to amuse your children while they are eating their dinner (a home-made bubble wand), how to keep your fishing bait dry (an ingenious little box), or how to soothe a sore back (a back-massaager made out of an abacus).

The book also reminds me how stifling abundance can be: A man describes a radio he made, "This all seems incredible and ridiculous now, after you've seen the Chinese radios in the shops. There's so much of everything now, it's hard to understand the way we lived then. And how we should live now." Indeed.

First published in 1989 in an illustrated 480-page edition, Johnson's sweeping chronicle of the making, merchandising and drinking of wine has been considerably pared down but remains brimful of fascinating information. Beginning with what we know of oenology in ancient Egypt and Greece, the text travels up to the 21st century, citing, for example, countries that produced the "most exciting wines" of 2003. Along the way, famed wine writer Johnson revisits the ongoing debate of who is responsible for introducing vineyards into France, reveals that the coupling of bottle and cork in the 17th century allowed wine to age properly and recalls Thomas Jefferson declaring that wine was "the only antidote to the bane of whiskey." Sidebars throughout relate sprightly anecdotes, such as the story of Magellan stocking his ships for the 1519–1521 circumnavigation of the globe (he spent more on sherry than he did on armaments—and then got himself killed en route). Some 125 maps and illustrations in lush color and b&w depict everything from a 5,000-year-old panel that is the first known illustration of wine drinking to a striking photo of a hyper-modernistic winery in Spain. While necessarily less comprehensive than the initial edition, this version is a thorough survey of the elixir that, as Johnson says, owes its popularity to its power to banish care.

About the Author
Hugh Johnson is recognized as the world's favourite wine writer. Hugh Johnson's first book and internationally bestselling Wine was published in 1966, and subsequent award-winning titles, including Story of Wine and Wine Companion, now in its fifth edition, have established him as one of the subject's foremost writers. He then went on to write The World Atlas of Wine, also now in its fifth edition and co-authored with Jancis Robinson. His annually updated Pocket Wine Book sells over 400,000 copies each year. Hugh lives in Essex. Margaret Rand, Editor of this edition, is an award-winning wine writer and a former editor of Wine International. She is the co-author (with Oz Clarke) of Grapes & Wines and the General Editor of Hugh Johnson's Pocket Wine Book and Mitchell Beazley's Classic Wine Library series. Margaret also contributes to a wide range of international publications. Margaret lives in London.

How about a little history with that glass of wine...

I have just begun perusing this book. It's really not a tome one reads cover to cover. One goes back and forth. It's really a good reference work if one needs to know a little about the history of wine. Since I write historical fiction, it's a good book to have around. After all, the peoples of history drank lots of the liquid we call wine. It is a ceremonial as well as social drink.

Since one of the stories I tell as a storyteller is about Medea, it was very interesting to learn that the cultivation of wine came from her part of the world, Colchis, which is now Georgia. I think of Medea as a chemist, so I now wonder if this ancient myth's location had anything to do with the cultivation and fermenting of wine. Was it she who took this knowledge to the Mediterranean when she escaped with Jason to that location? We can only speculate. I keep reading this book with each glass of wine I take in the evenings.

Coffee Table Textbook on Wine

This is a classic text on the history of wine, and it is out-of-print! Though required for a college class, it is well written by one of the few people who the subject good enough to get it right. The illustrated edition is worth the extra cost not only for the informational photographs, but also for the history of wine as told through artwork from around the world! Many classic paintings are reproduced in the volume, which makes this book at home on the coffee table not the library!

As good as a glass of wine

Many people consider "useless culture" to have knowledge about certain issues. Many would claim: "Why do I have to know about wine?". The answer is very simple, indeed. Wine is part of the culture of a people and more than being a drink it is a form of art.

Considering the wine a form of useful knowledge and a form of art, "The sorty of wine" is a masterpiece on the subject. It is also written in such a way you may feel you are part of the trips Mr. Johnson did in order to come up with this brilliant work. A book for the lovers of this beverage that is more than something to drink, it is a pleasure for the soul.
