Decent Story, Bad Editing

As much as I love the .hack//G.U. universe, I will say there are far too many retellings. The games (the original), the manga, the movie, and now these novels. While most of these are pretty, they tend to fall a bit short of the games' storytelling.
However, I think the novels have finally done something right.
What works with the novels is that they can take the time to pace and explain things. It draws the reader in more so than perhaps reading the manga. It's also nice that the novels get down the retelling part of all this. They combine just enough original material along with the story some fans know and love from the games. It works surprisingly well.
For instance, in this volume Haseo and friends get stuck in the game. Literally. This is a very interesting plot twist that I felt the novels handled fairly well. On top of which, they depart from the games' storyline by doing some plot dumping about Kite and pals' adventure from the first set of .hack games.
This is where the retelling formula finally works for me. It follows along something that's familiar enough while also adding in something fresh so that it's not a simple rehash.
Unfortunately, the major problem with the second volume of the .hack//G.U. novels is the editing. Tokyopop screwed up. A lot. Many characters' names are misspelled or, even worse, flipped around in a conversation, making it incredibly confusing for the reader. There are also several times that the font suddenly changes and just stays that way. This is unacceptable; someone should have spotted this. It feels like no second checking was done. For a professional product, I expect to at least have the font stay consistent. This isn't even a matter of translation, it's simply lazy editing. It really disconnects the reader from the story when there are such glaringly obvious errors like this.
Therefore, even though I quite liked the story in the novel itself, the horrible editing done by Tokyopop makes me bump down the rating. Unless you're an impatient .hack fan, I would wait until a reprinting, if one is ever done. I would certainly hope for one, anyway.

A great story with a marked improvement in prose

Continuing the series of .hack//G.U. novel adaptations, Borderline MMO is a marked improvement over it's predecessor. Picking up right where The Terror of Death left off, Borderline MMO ramps up the already stellar plot tremendously, answering plenty of questions and bringing up new ones.
The prose is significantly improved here and as a result the novel reads a lot better. There are, however, some strange issues with the translation. The protagonist whose name was romanized as "Ryou" is now "Ryo" and the character "Nala" is at one time referred to in this book as "Nara," but these inconsistencies don't wholly detract from the quality of the book.
Another fantastic addition to this book is the expansion of viewpoints to other characters and some "real world" scenes that provide important insights.
Overall this book is really more of the same, and it certainly can't stand on it's own without reading the prior volume, but certain problems of the prior volume's weak prose seem to be inadvertently addressed here. Hamazaki just needed to hit his stride.
