An okay book

I found this book alone not enough to actually learn the subject. In conjunction with good lectures, or with other resources, the subject could be adequately covered.

Keep at it, Eugene!

To be vitally human there are a few authors one must read - Shakespeare, Plato, Rousseau, Alan Bloom and Eugene Hecht. With only limited exaggeration - notable among man's achievements is Hecht's new 4th edition of Optics. The first edition was the central (and only) text assigned in junior year optics for physics majors at many universities in the 1980's. As a near adolescent I was pleased by expert writing and well delivered humor in those far off years of college life.
The wonders of electromagnetics - which leads to everything in our modern age of electronics, radar, telescopes and computers - is beautifully clarified with clear pictures, concise description and completing examples in this new edition.
I hope Hecht lives to be a thousand such that the hundredth edition of Optics can enlighten people in the 31st century with as much joy and fascination as his 4th edition does today.
After so many years away I find Hecht there again to help me, not this time to peak inside the mind of nature but to make a living, and do so with added pleasure, knowing Hecht continues to improve the nearly perfect.

OK textbook, could have been better

I used this textbook for an introductory optics course. It was an average book. There weren't any examples in the core of the text, but fortunately the author did include worked solutions in the appendix for some of the end-of-chapter problems, which I used as examples to work from. Most of the questions that were answered were the easier ones, that anybody halfway intelligent should be able to figure out.

On the plus side, there were lots of equations and lots of description to help learn the material. Some sections were better than others. The sections on mirrors and lenses, for example, were wonderful; I never understood that stuff in high school, and Hecht made it all clear. The tables he had for the different types of lenses/mirrors and their properties were great. An example of a poor section was that on diffraction; I had no clue what he was talking about.

The book is a bit expensive, but overall it is alright; certainly better than some of the other books I used during my degree!

Nice Starter Book

This book is great it has lots for full color photos on 5 builds. One thing that I didnt like is the fact that it is more of a basic how to do a basic chop. Dont think that you will get this book and have a $5000.00 chopper in a week. The guys in the book are all pros and get hooked up alot easier than I could ever do. I cant go in the shop and bang out a tank for the cost of the sheet metal. But it gives you a general idea of where to start. IF you have never done a project like this and just want to know where to get started, its is worth the money.

American Chopper might be entertainment, but doesnt teach you shit

This book describes the technicalities of a chopper bike in laymen's terms such as angles, engines, etc. The difference between buying frames and making up your own frames, and what is good and bad as a rule of thumb. Book is great if you just want to know about choppers or actually thinking of building your own from parts or from scratch. I now understand what questions to ask about kit parts and handling/power considerations.

Carefully structured and beautifully illustrated

I have never heard of Jasmina Susak. However, this proved to be an excellent introduction to simple portraiture with colored pencils. English is not her native language and some sentences are a bit awkward. Despite this, they are simple to understand and more clearly written than many books by native speakers. Each step of the process is illustrated with a single example. The book covers the creation of a single portrait, but it does so in exquisite detail with each step carefully described and clearly illustrated.

Some of the illustrations do not line up directly with the text that describes them. However, every step of the process is included and simply flipping through the pages to examine each illustration is just as illuminating as reading the text.

About the Author

Ben Prusinski is an Oracle Certified Professional (OCP), Oracle ACE Director, and database architect with more than 14 years of experience with Oracle data warehouse and Oracle E-Business applications. As a corporate database consultant, he has provided services to dozens of Fortune-500 clients. Ben is an internationally recognized expert in Oracle high availability, database replication, database migrations, performance tuning, database security, and ERP implementations. He is also a popular speaker at major conferences such as Oracle OpenWorld, IOUG, and Oracle Collaborate.

Gustavo Gonzalez, Oracle ACE, began working with Oracle in the late 1990s as a Business Systems Analyst for Nike Argentina where he helped rollout Oracle Financials 10.7. He also supported the BI tools that Nike's America's Sales division depended on and took on lead roles in Oracle implementations in Brazil and South Africa. After working as a Sr. Consultant for Oracle Argentina and as Danone Argentina's ERP Project Manager, Gustavo joined IT Convergence as Global IT Director in 2006; and was named CTO in 2012. IT Convergence has implemented Oracle HRMS, Oracle Telesales, Oracle Service, Noetix, and OBIEE globally. He was honored as Oracle ACE in August 2010 for his strong credentials as Oracle community enthusiast and advocate, and in 2012 was named Oracle ACE Director, the first in Argentina and first on Applications in LATAM.

This book teases the audience with a variety of topics not previously covered in many other books written about Oracle E Business Suite and leaves the user wanting more.
It is an informative read for technical consultants who are trying to get a grasp of the functional applications which make up the R12 Oracle E Business Suite.
The book covers a huge spectrum of modules from different business areas.
Other authors have tried to focus on specific areas such as Finance or Supply Chain but gone into much greater depth giving hands on exercises which can be used to practice the implementation and support of each module.
This particular tome covers Financials, Supply Chain and Projects. The materials are ideally laid out for senior executives to work with a project manager at the Business Analysis stage and understand at a high level the principles of each module and the decisions that have to be taken to implement each module.
The book stops short of showing detailed screen shots and exercises to implement the modules. This material would be covered by attending an Oracle University course specific to each module or working closely with a functional consultant hired to implement the modules on your project.

My gut feel is that the book is trying to do too much in one volume. It may be an idea for the authors to focus on a specific target audience and give them more depth.
I did like the overviews of E Business Suite Tax, Credit management and Sub ledger Accounting.
The presentation on Business Intelligence is informative and fairly detailed which describes one of the key features Oracle has promoted in release 12 . If I were the authors I would expand this chapter greatly and actually start from the point of view of a dissatisfied executive who cant get ready access to their enterprise information. Build on the steps required to take the business requirements to configuring, testing and using the Business Intelligence dashboards.
I would also want a discussion on the pro's and cons of the various tools out there on the market and which one suits E Business Suite in different scenario's.

About the Author
Mr Vincent Kaminski has spent fourteen years working in different positions related to quantitative analysis and risk management in the merchant energy industry. The companies he has worked for include Citigroup, Sempra Energy Trading, Reliant Energy, Citadel Investment Group, and Enron (from 1992 to 2002) where he was the head of the quantitative modeling group. Prior to beginning a career in the energy industry, Mr Kaminski was a vice president in the research department, bond portfolio analysis group, of Salomon Brothers in New York (from 1986 to 1992). In September 2006 Mr Kaminski accepted an academic position with Rice University in Houston (Jesse H. Jones Graduate School of Business) where he is teaching MBA level classes on energy markets, energy risk management and valuation of energy derivatives. Mr Kaminski holds an M.S. degree in international economics, a Ph.D. degree in theoretical economics from the Main School of Planning and Statistics in Warsaw, Poland, and an MBA from Fordham University in New York. He is a recipient of the 1999 James H. McGraw award for Energy Risk Management (Energy Risk Manager of the Year). Mr Kaminski has published a number of papers, and contributed to several books, on the energy markets.
