Excellent
By Purity is Myth
If you could judge a book by its cover, choose this one. The cover picture is delicious, and so is the book! The book will be like a mother to you - it guides you through each step as if no one had ever taught you carefully, sensitively enough, how to learn a language on your own. I say this book is not tedious because it doesn't ask you to simply figure that part (the self-teaching part) out all on your own. On the other hand, if you already know how to teach yourself, that's not a problem - just skim through those parts.

I have used Teach Yourself: Swahili by Joan Russell, Kiswahili Kwa Kitendo, and Swahili: A Foundation... by Hinnebusch, and I have already basically gone through two semester's worth of Swahili, but this one put together by native East Africans is my favorite and still has a lot to teach me after all that. It starts you out with a friendly introduction to each lesson, gives you a warm-up, and the dialogues are longer than in other courses, especially the non-audio ones. Dialogues also come with translations. As usual, there's a list of vocab and, like Teach Yourself, there's a list of key phrases, but unlike Teach yourself, they are more than just translations from the dialogue. Culture notes are a lot of fun and quite elaborate and practical:

"When you get to your table, you won't find napkins (tishu) waiting there for you. Napkins are generally available at the restaurant counter, and customers help themselves. Don't be surprised if you see other customers eating with their hands; this is acceptable table manners in many parts of the world. If you choose to eat with your hand, be sure to use your right hand, as eating with the left hand is considered to be at least odd, if not downright rude and unhygienic, especially in Muslim communities... When you're ready to pay the bill, simply ask naomba kulipa (can I pay?)..."

There are also readings which come in Swahili with English translation. These readings are simpler than in other courses, which makes them less tedious - I'm not sure if that means you get less out of it. Then there are grammar notes. There are the exercises, which are plentiful and simple; answer key at the end of the lesson. Finally, there's an independent study box in each lesson which just suggests how you can enhance your learning experience, but it's a good reminder if you are bad about keeping up with journals and the like, or if you've never studied a language before.

The audio is much better than Teach Yourself: the voices are clearer, with better enunciation. Also, Teach Yourself fills up half of the recordings with annoying English-speakers who are just telling you about the dialogue, which Living Language doesn't do. You end up with about 12 times more audio than Teach Yourself. There are two sections to the audio: one you listen to along with the lesson, the other is supplemental and can be listened to any time.

Another great thing about this course is that it's brand new and very modern! Each lesson has a salient theme, which is drilled into you by its recurrence in each part of the lesson. And there are a lot of parts to each lesson - it's very elaborate! Unique to this book is its inclusion of a lesson on internet language. This course doesn't look very long, and although I have only glanced at most of it, it seems unlikely to be quite as thorough as Hinnebusch. If you are very intent on learning the language, it couldn't hurt to have both Hinnebusch and this book, but this one would be my first recommendation for the independent learner.

The best one yet!
By T. Thomas
During a recent visit to Tanzania I became fascinated with the people there and with Swahili. In my enthusiasm and desire to learn Swahili in the most elegant way possible, I purchased about 8 books and 3 audio programs. When I happened upon this book listing in Amazon.com I almost didn't buy it thinking that I already had more books than I needed. However, I was intrigued by the first reader's review and decided to take a chance on it. I was not dissapointed!!! I totally agree with the first review. This book and set of tapes is the clearest and most "user-friendly" program to date. I am very pleased with the style and extremely well-integrated teaching process. If, unlike me, you want to buy only ONE book - I would recommnend this one.

Kitabu hiki kitakufundishia lugha ya Kiswahili!
By Philip Georgis
This book is simply amazing. I am in complete agreement with the first two people who commented on it. As they have already done an excellent job of describing it, I just wanted to put forward another positive opinion.

The book is very easy to use, very informational about the language and culture, and guides you very smoothly throughout, ultimately leading you to a strong intermediate level in Swahili. This book was immensely fun to use, and my motivation for studying the language dropped off quite a bit, because I knew that my remaining resource at that point was Teach Yourself Swahili, which isn't nearly as good.

I had used much of this book and TY Swahili before going to Tanzania for two weeks in July, and I can say that it was very helpful and the people I met there were incredulous at my abilities in the language. I credit my success in Swahili to this book and I think it is a must-have for all learners of Swahili!

Kitabu hiki kimenifundishia lugha ya Afrika nzuri hii vizuri sana, na kitakufundishia pia! Na kitabu hiki, Kiswahili si lugha ngumu, ni lugha rahisi na ya kusisimuwa.

(This book has taught me this beautiful African language very well, and it will teach you too! With this book, Swahili is not a difficult language, it is an easy and exciting language.)

Good luck! Kila la kheri!

The End of Infinity CHAPTER
1

Ghost in the Machine

Solomon Roka moved through the Rüstov super-dreadnaught Apocalypse with the swift, silent purpose of a black ops commando. He was a tall man with a lean, muscular build, short black hair, and three days’ worth of stubble on his face. He wore a formfitting black suit lined with flexible circuitry and carried a backpack filled with all the tools of his profession. Roka crept around corners like a thief in the night, and although the time of day in deep space was relative, he was without question a thief. He was there to steal the future of the Rüstov people.

Roka approached a sliding metal door with a small window right at eye level. As he reached out to open it, a green light lit up on its access panel. He froze in place and his heart followed suit. The door was about to open from the other side. Rüstov sentries were coming through. They hadn’t seen him yet, but he had only a few seconds before they did.

Roka had no cover in the empty passageway. The door on the opposite end of the hall was too far away, but he ran for it, hugging the shadows as he went. The sound of compressed air being released filled the hallway as the doors began to slide apart behind him. He had time left for only a simple choice: right or left. The lack of an exit in either direction was not a problem. The uncertainty surrounding each option was. Roka made up his mind and activated his Ghost Suit. The circuits covering his body blazed with light, rendering his molecules intangible as he leaped through the wall directly to his left. He just hoped he wasn’t diving into a situation worse than the one he was trying to escape.

Roka found himself alone when he emerged on the other side of the wall. He stood on the engineering deck of the ship, overlooking the Apocalypse’s powerful warp core. He had to get his bearings straight and find his way to the detention block, but first he needed a minute to collect himself and gather his nerves. They were scattered everywhere, which was unusual for him. This kind of operation was Roka’s stock in trade, but this was more than just another job. This breakout wasn’t about money; his own freedom was on the line this time too. There was something else as well. The Apocalypse wasn’t just any Rüstov ship. It was the personal flagship of the Rüstov emperor. Roka was quite happy to go on living without ever having the honor of meeting the Rüstov leader.

Getting back to business, Roka activated a holographic map-finder device on his wrist. It emitted a high-frequency sonar pulse that generated blueprints of the ship and projected them into the air in front him. The ship’s plans glowed brightly in the darkness, faded down, and returned as each sonic pulse sounded. Roka saw where he needed to go. His objective was three hundred feet below him, straight down.

Roka measured the drop with a laser ruler and took out a length of special evaporating rope. He latched himself to a railing overlooking the ship’s engine, jumped over the top, and dove down alongside the white-hot column of pure energy that powered the starship’s Infinite Warp Core. Air whistled through Roka’s hair as he fell, anchored to the walkway above. He swung his feet out to land as the floor raced toward him. The thin, black rope stretched like a bungee cord, slowing his descent, and then dissolved into smoke as he touched down softly on the ground. The jump would have been perfect if not for the fact that he landed right among a trio of Rüstov Para-Soldiers.

Before the Rüstov even had time to register his presence, Roka flipped down a pair of shades and set off a light grenade to blind his enemies. He grabbed the Para-Soldier closest to him by the wrist, turned, and flipped it over his shoulder. The Rüstov sentry crashed into one of its fellow guards, and Roka detached a small disk from his belt. He slapped it onto the third Para-Soldier’s chest. Electric currents poured out of the disk, ripping through the Rüstov’s body and permanently disabling it. The first two Para-Soldiers were just getting back up when Roka jumped and threw both feet into them, kicking them back over the edge of the platform. They fell into the warp core’s towering column of energy and were vaporized instantly. The whole fight, if it could truly be described as such, lasted all of seven seconds.

The Rüstov threat neutralized, Roka once again activated his Ghost Suit and phased through the wall on his right. He emerged in the detention block and took a deep breath, mentally preparing himself for what would be the hardest part of the mission. Roka walked down the hall, forcing himself to ignore the pleas for help coming from the prisoners who were locked up in the cells to his left and right. It wasn’t easy. Roka knew what was in store for them. A long time ago, he’d been a Rüstov prisoner himself. It was absolutely killing him to leave them behind, but there was nothing he could do for them. Not here. Not now. But maybe . . . just maybe, if what he’d been told was true, there was hope for them yet.

At end of the hall, Roka arrived at a locked door. He could see through its foggy laser-proof window well enough to make out a prison lab on the other side. This was it. Roka narrowed the focus on his Ghost Suit to phase only his hand. It flickered like a faded movie projection as he ran it through the lock, shorting out its circuits. The door slid open and Roka entered the lab.

The room was empty, which was good, but Roka still didn’t like what he found inside. In the center of the lab was an operating table surrounded by vicious-looking surgical tools and trays of techno-organic hardware. Roka didn’t know what kind of sick experiments went on in this room, but it was clear that whatever prisoner had spent time on that operating table wasn’t dealing with the standard Rüstov infection.

Next to the table was a stasis pod, large enough to fit a single person inside. Next to that, a holo-screen readout displayed the words “Infection Level: 25%.” Roka plugged a CodeBreaker into a data port on the pod’s access panel, and the cover rose up like the lid of a coffin. Gas poured out from the inside. As the vapors cleared, Roka noticed a red light flashing on the pod, blinking out the words “Incubation Period Interrupted.” He’d set off a silent alarm. Roka frowned and, in a very businesslike manner, knelt down to remove a pair of special suits from his pack. He held one out toward the figure in the pod, who was just waking up. “Put this on. We don’t have much time.”

A groggy voice called out from inside the pod. “What’s going on? Who are you?”

Roka kicked his pack away and stood up, pulling his suit on over his clothes. “I’m Solomon Roka. I’m here to rescue you.”

Jack Blank stepped out of the stasis pod and nearly fell over. Roka caught him and propped him up. “Can you walk?” Jack nodded, and Roka thrust a space suit into his arms. “Put this on. Quickly. We need to be gone before the guards show u—”

They moved into the light and Roka stopped talking.

“What is it? What’s wrong?” Jack asked.

It took Roka a moment to answer. He was locked in a frozen stare, transfixed by Jack’s appearance. “You, uh . . .” Roka shook his head and started sealing up his own suit. “You’ve got something on your eye, kid.”

Jack touched a hand to his face and drew in a sharp breath. He checked his reflection in the stasis pod’s glass lid, and sure enough, there it was. A parting gift from the Rüstov. Just a little something to take home with him. The mark of Rüstov infection surrounded Jack’s eye like a line drawn with black paint.

An Awesome Ending to an Awesome series
By Mundie Moms & Mundie Kids Book Reviews
What a fantastic series for young readers! As a parent, nothing is more satisfying than discovering a book you hope your child will pick up and enjoy every moment they spend reading it like you did. This is one series my son is anxious to start reading this year, and I can't wait for him to start it. Jack Blank's adventures span three books, The Accidental Hero, The Secret War (the links go to my reviews for each book) and the final book in the series, The End of Infinity. What an awesome series this is! I have loved reading about Jack's journey, watching him grow as a character, and getting to be apart of his world. Everything about this series, it's characters and it's world building is simply amazing!

Through out the entire series Jack has been overlooked many times and told he'd never amount to anything. In reality this resilient young hero proves he can do more than anyone thought he could, especially in this book. Even when the whole world, both the Imagination and the real world are against him, he finds the strength within himself to do some incredible things. I loved that about him. One of the things I loved about this series is the messages found in each book. Some of my favorites messages in the series have come from a character whom I've compared to Yoda before, because of his inspirations messages and the good he sees in Jack. He's always giving advice to Jack, but it's also advice that readers can take to heart. This time my favorite message is from Jack, and in saying this I also feel like it shows readers just how much Jack has grown as a character.

"A hero was someone who tried to make a difference, even when everyone else thought all hope was lost. Being a hero meant putting the needs of others before your own. Being a hero meant sacrifice." (pg. 321)

Jack proves he's a hero time and time again. Similar to two other beloved children's characters, Harry Potter and Luke Skywalker, Jack Blank is a character who has some incredible odds stacked against him, and when his journey is done he realizes his future is, and has always been in his hands. He determines his own outcome. Before you roll your eyes that I'm comparing him to these greats, I've it before in talking about this series, but I'll give you a few new reasons why here. Growing up these characters are deemed as your every day kid, and some would call them nerdy, but regardless, these three have this incredible inner strength, amazing will power and that goodness about them that make them all unlikely heroes, and beloved by both kids and adults like. They each do some pretty incredible things in their own way. Though they're guided by a wise friend, it's up to each of them to find their own way and become that great person their mentor sees in them. They're all destined for great things, and capture their reader's attention, and make us as readers cheer them one. Like Harry and Luke, Jack is a character readers will relate to in some form. We've either been in his shoes or been told we'd never amount to anything, or we've been that character who was bullied, or been put in situations were we wondered how in the world we would get through it. Similar to the other two beloved heroes, Jack Blank is a new unlikely hero young fans will be rooting for, will be inspired by and will fall in love with.

Now I know this is a middle grade series, and I'm a grown up who's raving about this book/series. Let me just say, great literature, especially children's literature doesn't have a cap of what age group reads it. This is a book and series adults will love just as much as kids. They're plenty of action and humor that readers of all ages will enjoy, and get. If you're looking for a fabulous book that the entire family can enjoy, I highly recommend picking this one up! You can be sure you'll see this on my top 10 favorite lists at the end of the year.

Liked the other two books better

SPOILER WARNING
I loved this trilogy and thought the story was very unique and exciting. But i felt like the last book was too rushed and everything was solved within a couple of chapters. I should warn beforehand that this post kind of turned into a rant, but its because i got really into the stories and characters.

First of all, am i the only one that was a little bit let down at who jacks father is? i mean i like the character, but i was kind of hoping the dad would somehow be Stendeval, that would explain his blind faith in jack and his desire to protect him.

One thing that completely bothered me was if Revile and Jack were able to survive and live no matter what is done to them and thier body. Revile survived years after being blown apart by legend, and burned over and over by jack. why in the world does skerrens blades damage him???? How are his blades stronger than revile, than legend, than all the other heroes???? Also, why was revile killed in one second by magus if he is so powerful?

And how magus was defeated was ridiculous, after all he did he was that easy to defeat? and the fact that jack made such a stupid deal, and kept it because he had "promised", this is coming from someone that has lied and kept secrets.

Also, Skerren, really got on my nerves with his obsession to kill jack, he was like a dog protecting a bone from a pack of hungry dogs. it got very old, very fast. I dont understand why a character like him was chosen as a friend for jack, i liked Zhi much better.

Smart was probably one of the more hateful characters i have ever read about, the author did great there. i just couldnt understand why everyone kept following him, he would risk his followers lives, and run like a coward to save himself. and yet everyone was still trying to blindly kill jack, who kept trying to defend all these idiots.

Anyway, i really liked Allegra and her loyalty to jack. I liked that jack isnt perfect and made many mistakes.

i mention these things to show that one book wasnt enough everything was too rushed and things were fixed in a matter of pages. but regardless, the book was filled with such imagination, and the story and characters drew me in, and thats whats most important.

Ira Lapidus' global history of Islamic societies, first published in 1988, has become a classic in the field. For over two decades, it has enlightened students, scholars, and others with a thirst for knowledge about one of the world's great civilizations. This book is based on parts one and two of Lapidus' monumental A History of Islamic Societies, revised and updated, describes the transformations of Islamic societies from their beginning in the seventh century, through their diffusion across the globe, into the challenges of the nineteenth century. The story focuses on the organization of families and tribes, religious groups and states, depicts them in their varied and changing contexts, and shows how they were transformed by their interactions with other religious and political communities into a varied, global and interconnected family of societies. The book concludes with the European commercial and imperial interventions that initiated a new set of transformations in the Islamic world, and the onset of the modern era. Organized in narrative sections for the history of each major region, with innovative, analytic summary introductions and conclusions, this book is a unique endeavor. Its breadth, clarity, style, and thoughtful exposition will ensure its place in the classroom and beyond as a guide for the educated reader.

By Tom R. Zander
This was a great read, but my Kindle version was flawed by a random appearance of fat parentheses in many of the words, which created a stumbling block in reading this dense work. I still have no idea what some of the words are supposed to be, since they are both Arabic and parenthetical!
